Teaching for
WMI
The Wilderness Medicine
Institute requires all of its instructors to attend and successfully
complete an instructor training course prior to teaching for the
Institute. We conduct two different instructor training courses
each year, the Wilderness First Responder Instructor Training
Course (WFR ITC) and the Wilderness First Aid Instructor
Training Course (WFA ITC). The WFR ITC is designed to train
Wilderness EMTs to instruct WFR and WEMT programs. The WFA ITC
is designed to train WFRs to teach WFA programs. Qualifications
for the two training courses are as follows:
For the Wilderness
First Responder ITC:
- Wilderness EMT-B or other advanced medical training.
- Professional level CPR card.
- Pre-hospital emergency medical experience.
- Two or more years teaching in an outdoor education setting
or classroom.
- Several seasons experience leading extended trips in wilderness
settings.
- A WFR Recert or higher course within the past two years.
For the WFA ITC:
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or other advanced medical
training.
- Professional level CPR card.
- Direct experience managing common injuries and illnesses in
a wilderness setting.
- Two or more years teaching in an outdoor education setting
or classroom.
- Several seasons experience leading extended trips in wilderness
settings.
- A WFR Recert or higher course within the past two years.
Following an application
review, qualified candidates will receive a phone interview. On
the basis of the application and interview, a limited number of
candidates will be selected to attend the training course.
The WFR ITC will be
held from November 2-11, 2008. The early application deadline
is May 11. If space is available, a second round of WFR ITC
application reviews may take place in August. The second application
deadline is August 1.
The WFA ITC will be
held from November 2-8, 2008. The WFA ITC application deadline
is August 15.
These applications may
be viewed and printed with version 3.0 or higher of the free Adobe® Acrobat® Reader software which is available here.
