Douglas S. Luke

Elected to the NOLS Board: First term 2000 – 2006; for a second term 2007 - 2010
NOLS Graduate: 2002 Wind River Wilderness Horsepacking

Doug, a NOLS parent, has been volunteering for NOLS since 1994. In 2002 Luke took his first course—horsepacking in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming.

In 1964 Luke received a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia and in 1966 he earned his MBA from the Darden School. Luke has spent the bulk of his career as a venture capitalist and personal wealth investment manager. He is president and chief executive officer of HL Capital, Inc., a personal investment business in New York City and serves on the board of directors for MeadWestvaco Corporation and Regency Centers Corporation. Luke is on the board of directors of the Adirondack Council, the leading research and advocacy organization for the preservation and protection of the Adirondack Park, and is a past chair of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve. He is a member of the Ausable Club, the UVA/Yale Club, and the Mashomack Fish and Game Preserve in Pine Plains, NY.

Luke is a runner, completing four New York marathons, and he enjoys fly-fishing, bird hunting and horseback riding. He lives with his wife in Pine Plains, NY and has three children.

Doug was elected to serve as a trustee for NOLS in February 2000. He chairs the Alumni and Development Committee and serves on the Public Policy Committee and the Governance Committee.  Prior to his election as a NOLS trustee, Doug served on the NOLS Advisory Council.
